But, there is something you can do to protect yourself from fickle weather - be protected with the right insurance coverage.

Preferred's Safe Windshield Replacement FAQs

Brought to you in part by Dow Automotive

Q: What holds your windshield in tact?

A: Urethane Adhesive bonds the windshield to the body of your car.

Q: What does the windshield do for safety?

A: The windshield adds structural strength to the automobile, and for many airbags to properly work they deflect off the windshield. The Urethane Adhesive holds the windshield in place during impact.

Q: How do you know your original windshield installation was safe?

A: There are government and manufacturer requirements imposed for motor vehicle safety. Both the adhesive and installation process must pass a series of tests, including:

  • Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard Windshield Retention Crash
  •  Roof Crush Standards
  •  Intrusion Tests

Q: Will your replacement windshield give the same protection as the original?

A: With the use of Dow Automotive Systems adhesive, the bond strength is equal to that of the manufacturer’s original installation.

Q: How do you know Dow Automotive Systems adhesives will retain your windshield during a crash?

A: Dow Automotive Systems adhesives are crash proven. They test the adhesives by replacing a windshield in a car and crashing it head-on into a solid wall. Dow Automotive Systems’ safe drive-away times are confirmed through actual vehicle crashes.

Q: Will the adhesive bond last?

A: Dow Automotive Systems subjects all of its adhesives to severe long-term durability lab and field tests to ensure lasting performance and long-term safety. Adhesives are exposed to a number of elements to verify long-term strength:

  • Cold
  • Heat
  • Humidity
  • Rain
  •  Salt Air

Q: Why is it important to wait the prescribed time before driving the car?

A: For safety. It takes time to meet the requirements for windshield retention. The longer the urethane cures, the stronger the bond.

Why replace a windshield, if it can be repaired?

At Preferred Glass, proven performance windshield repair can be the best solution, as an alternative, to the high cost of a windshield replacement.

Preferred’s windshield repairs are:

• Done quickly and easily, at a fraction of the cost of a new windshield

• Strong and permanent, to keep cracks from spreading

Did you know the following can be repaired?

  • Bull’s Eye
  • Star Break
  • Combination

Damage

A windshield consists of two layers of glass with a plastic (vinyl) laminate between each piece (used for safety as protection against complete shattering). Breaks in the outer layer of glass, which do not penetrate the laminate, can be repaired.

Repair

If damage to your windshield is within 1 1/4 inches (or 3 cm.), a repair can be made that is as strong as the original glass.

So, how are the repairs made?

8-Step Process:

1. We begin by cleaning the glass using a microscopic steel pick, removing any debris, which may have infected the break.

2. Depending upon the severity and condition of the crack or pit, we drill the damaged area. Using a drill bit that is slightly larger than a needle with a diamond-like surface, we will create a channel for our polymer (or curing agent) to penetrate the pit.

3. After a channel has been created, we attach a suction system over the pit, adjusted to the exact convex and angle of your windshield.

4. Under high pressure, air that may have penetrated the glass itself, is now extracted from the pit.

5. While still under high pressure, with the pit now free of air or air bubbles, we carefully inject the pit or crack with a polymer. The pit or crack will remain under pressure for 5-15 minutes depending upon the severity of damage.

6. Once the damaged area is fully injected, the suction system is detached and the pit is immediately capped and cured with ultraviolet radiation and heat (the sun works nicely, though we are able to cure the spot with a high powered UV lamp when sun is not available). When cured, the polymer closely resembles the consistency of glass.

7. Using a razor blade, excess polymer is scraped from the pit, leveling the repaired area to that of the windshield.

8. The windshield is cleaned inside and out, and a final inspection of the repair is made.
